Understanding CARB Compliance
California has some of the strictest diesel emissions regulations in the world. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles operating in California must comply with CARB's Truck and Bus Regulation — and non-compliance can result in significant fines and operational restrictions.
CARB Truck and Bus Regulation
Requires heavy-duty diesel trucks and buses operating in California to meet specific emissions standards. Vehicles must be tested and certified to demonstrate compliance.
Opacity Standards
CARB sets maximum opacity (smoke) limits for diesel exhaust. Vehicles exceeding these limits are out of compliance and subject to enforcement action.
OBD Requirements
Newer heavy-duty diesel vehicles are required to have functioning on-board diagnostic systems. CARB requires OBD checks as part of the compliance verification process.
Roadside Enforcement
CHP and CARB enforcement officers conduct roadside inspections. Having a current test certificate from a certified tester is your best protection against citations and out-of-service orders.
Stay Compliant. Stay on the Road.
